Thoughts on Emotional Intelligence

I find the very concept of emotional intelligence, or EQ, to be interesting. Not in the sense that we have developed our psychological understanding of humanity to a point of harnessing the wild torrents of emotion for our own benefit, as advertised in business settings. But in that we've continued down a path of discounting anything that doesn't fit into the purely logical structures of our present society to the point of finding a new and rational way to tout the benefits of suppressing or manipulating emotion as a healthy practice.

I have recently seen emotional intelligence summed up in the following statement: The ability to experience an emotion without reacting to it. A very grown up concept. At face value, it should certainly seem mature and beneficial. How many immature outbursts, tantrums essentially, have we seen thrown by people who should know better? Individuals overcome with emotion in moments and in places where such outbursts disrupt the feeling of safety and security of those around. Though, this take may be more a result of the boiled-down, buzz word aspects of our society more than the actual study of the subject. So what is the study of EQ?

First Gaming Recap

Hello dear reader, what a crazy couple of weeks its been. The stomach flu hit our house, as well as several of our friends', hard at the end of January leaving us reeling a bit as February began. However, it is a brand new week and I am back at the keyboard. As promised, I am beginning a weekly recap of our role playing sessions.
We're all pretty big nerds here and have been enjoying role-playing games for many, many years now. Over the years, we've had friends come and go in our lives but they've always shared in our love for a good time, a good character, and a good story. Little wonder that, with so much of our lives wrapped up in the love of stories, I choose to pursue a life of writing.
We play a couple of the bigger, staple RPG games such as Dungeons and Dragons (3.5) and the Star Wars RPG, both d20 system and published by Wizards of the Coast. We also occasionally venture into other systems and games, though less so these days. It seems we've found our comfortable style.
With the new year my wife Jen, our good friend Bill, and I began a fresh D&D adventure in a new land. Allow me to introduce the world and the player characters:

A great darkness has fallen over the land of . The might and majesty of the former empire, a thriving civilization that spanned the whole of the mainland and the islands to the south, has expired. Extinguished in fire, conflict, and disease.
The plague, violent and indiscriminate, ravaged all peoples of the Empire, claiming 8 of 10 lives and left a crumbling, decaying world in its wake. Those few that escaped this wasting disease found themselves in a constant struggle for their very survival. These starving souls are prey for the unchecked wild beasts and growing bands of marauders who kill, plunder, and burn.
As much of the cultivated, civilized knowledge had been lost with the deaths of those that horded it, superstition has risen to predominance. Blindly, the denizens of this wasteland attempt to hack a living out of what remains. The slender thread of life hangs perilously in the fickle winds of fortune. Fear of ill omens and curses drive many to shun the unknown as ancient prejudices resurface. For many, the only law is that of the mob and those that twist it to their advantage.

Far in the north, a day's travel inland from the coast, lies the small village of Fowlglenn. Removed from the influence of the empire and spared the great dying, these farmers and herdsmen live a peaceful life. This is where Talys, daughter of Arda, was raised. Born under the sign of a comet that pierced the sky and steeped in mixed omens; her shock white hair, a powerful presence beyond her stature, and her chosen companion in the form of a serpent, Talys never quite fit amid the simple farmers.
Her father, a Walling (pronounced Vailing) raider from the large island to the north, and her mother, his stubborn conquest who refused to leave her land, reared her and her two brothers in the relative peace of a simple life. Never one for farming, Talys' father took to trapping, fur trade, and keeping the herds safe from native predators.
Talys, the middle of the three children, took after her father, joining him regularly on his hunting trips and learning the ways of the sword. Her brothers, by comparison, stayed home with their mother to tend to the land. As such, when Talys came of age, her father passed his large, two handed blade to her to carry.
Being of his Walling disposition and her mother's stubbornness, she regularly challenged others of the village to test her mettle. Quickly proving too much for the basic broom stick combat shared among the villager youth, Talys yearned for true tutelage. With her parent's blessing and a vague rumor of a notable swordsman in the town of Woodwall to the south, Talys set out to find her teacher and learn the ways of a sword master.

The cities can be a dangerous place in the wake of the great dying, as Katan Roy discovered early. Born wanting, Katan is of a slender frame and short stature at just under five feet tall. Orphaned at a young age, the small red head had to rely upon her own cunning and skill to survive. Rarely stealing directly from pockets and never from those that had less than herself, this young burglar took what she could to stave off starvation.
Where her fingers are deft and skilled, her eyes are less keen when it comes to discerning treasure from trinket. Many times her bounty turns out to be nothing more than common items; the brass buttons she snipped off a fine coat are merely painted wooden toggles, that bronze bowl is simply a cheap copper one, etc.
Avoiding the dangers of the cities often left her in the wilds, discovering small tricks to keep herself alive in the woods to the north. Food, shelter, water; Katan learned quickly how to secure them all and became more accustomed to life on the road than the town she was raised in.
Now, Katan travels from town to town with her only companion, a small raccoon named Olly, looking for her next score. With a light coin purse and rumbling belly, she finds herself heading east to the town of Woodwall.

Been Some Time...

Good news, everyone! I'm back! Having completed my first full length novel at the close of last year, I feel it is time to dust this blog off and start posting once more. What should you expect? More frequent updates during the search for publication, the process to a final, printed product, and other news. Also, more short stories, further ramblings, and accounts of RPG sessions written and run by yours truly. So, dear reader, stay tuned. There is definitely more to come!

For Whom Traffic Moves...

The other day I mentioned how absurdly self focused some people could be. I thought that I wouldn't be able to top that one any time soon. Well how wrong I was. Just tonight, while sitting in the drive-thru of our local BK, I saw something that staggered me.

First a little background on this situation. There is a four way stop light at the intersection of a busy commercial road which leads to the interstate and the entrance to a busy shopping center. Truckers shoot down this road at top speed and don't always manage to make the stop at a red light.

Okay, so here's what I saw. There were two vehicles waiting at the red light to leave the shopping center. The busy commercial road had the green and there were two vehicles turning left into the shopping center. All of a sudden the lead vehicle making the left turn just stops as soon as it enters the entry lane. He just stops! The vehicle behind him is now stuck in the middle of the road blocking both oncoming traffic and the cars waiting for the green light.

The passenger door of the stopped, lead vehicle opens and this kid, about 15, gets out in the middle of the road. He has some words with the driver then finally shuts the door and the car continues up the lane toward the stores. The truck following him waits for the kid for a moment to decide whether he's going to cross or let him pass. Remember this guy has been waiting in the middle of this road for minutes now. The kid steps back and lets him pass. The two vehicles that have been waiting to leave continue to sit through the now green light as this transpires.Yet, as the turning vehicles drive off, the kid crosses in front of the still waiting cars despite the green light! He then opens the passenger door and climbs into the first vehicle in line before finally anyone is allowed to move.

So what happened, in review, is that this kid was riding in one car, saw some friends he wanted to ride with in the perpendicular lane. The car he is in makes its turn and stops to let him out right next to this other vehicle making the guy behind him wait in the middle of the road for this to happen. The kid crosses the road and climbs into the other vehicle which is blocking all other traffic before finally driving off just before the light turns red again. And all of this again, I might add, in the entrance of a nearly empty freaking parking lot! WTF is wrong with people?

Parking Lot Faux Pas...

There is something interesting that I have seen happen many times and I wanted to mention it. Maybe you've seen it happen yourself. Maybe you've done it yourself, and if so you need to know that there are people who have noticed. What I'm talking about today is the following scenario:

You are driving along and pull into a large, mostly empty parking lot. There are literally dozens of empty, unused parking spots all over the place. And yet, while driving along in the actual, marked driving lane, you are blocked because two cars have stopped side by side so the drivers can talk. Two cars blocking traffic sitting motionless immediately next to dozens of open, available, unused parking spaces! I tell you folks, I have seen this happen not once, not twice, but many, many... many times. I honestly cannot believe it either. Each time it happens I want to take out my camera and start snapping pictures of the vehicles to put up online in places like Failblog.org. How can someone be so self-absorbed as to block other people who are driving correctly in an empty parking lot? The worst is when you honk and they get angry and wave you around to drive through the empty spaces they've snubbed as if you're an inconvenience to them and their chat time!

I saw one even better today ! I was pulling into a business which had two entrances. I couldn't use the first one because someone had decided to stop in the middle of the lane directly in front of a single parked car in a line of open parking spaces, thereby blocking the entrance lane. When I pulled into the other, further entrance, I come to find the reason this guy did this was because he was talking to two people who had walked up to his driver door. Even better, and you'll love this one, they had parked their truck near his in order to get out and walk up to his window to chat. However, they had parked across two handicapped parking spaces to do this! That's right. Not that they had parked in one handicapped spot, but across both of the available handicapped spots in an large, mostly empty parking lot.

Honest to god, there were a total of about eight vehicles, including mine and theirs, in this large lot... that's it. And yet they felt the need, the compulsion to block traffic and take up two handicapped spaces. How asinine can someone get? And before anyone comments, yes I did check to see if they had a handicapped license or even a temporary sticker. And no, they didn't. Now whether this was a cry for attention or just self-absorbed inconsiderateness to a staggering degree, that was pretty freaking pathetic. Worst of all, I know this won't be the last time I will see this kind of thing happen either. Next time I'm snapping photos to share with the world, period.

Re: Again and Again...

Here is something that occurred to me the other day. The preface "re" is used in many words. Recycle, Reuse, Recite, Re-post, Reprocessed, Reconstituted. "Re" means to do something again. So why do we call it a Refrigerator? Honestly. How often do we actually refrigerate items? To refrigerate something literally means to chill it again. How many items in our refrigerators do we allow to warm up to room temperature or hotter before we put them back in to chill down again?

When I take out my gallon of milk or carton of juice to pour a glass or use it to cook, it goes back in before it has a chance to heat up much meaning that I'm using my refrigerator to maintain a level of coldness. When I have leftover pizza or dinner, I put it in for the first time to be chilled... just once. When I cook something that needs to chilled before being served, I'm cooling the finished, cooked item for the first time... again once. Really there are only a few times when I am actually using my refrigerator to cool something down again. When chilled groceries come home after being in a hot car, when the reheated leftovers were a bit too much too eat and had to go back in. So really, why do we call it a refrigerator and not just a frigerator?

We don't call it a re-accelerator despite speeding up again and again while driving. We don't call it a re-on switch despite pushing it every time we need to turn our computers on. And we do these things much more often then we refrigerate items. I'm just saying...

Random Shameful* Thoughts...

So I've been thinking recently about how to bring my various talents into a moneymaking arena. I've see recently a number of funny cartoon type strips on Failblog and its subsidiary sites. Then the notion occurred to me, with regards to my Shame stories. Sometimes the events that occur are not meaty enough for a short story, but a comic strip along the same lines called Shame Shorts might be just the ticket. For instance, just the other day Jen came home from a long day at school and a quick trip to the grocery store with a headache. One of the items I had requested was a chocolate bar to help ease the long day's tension with the little one. I mean, let's face it chocolate is good for everyone, right?
I digress, so we talked a bit about her day and she told be about her headache. I asked if she wanted a bit of my chocolate bar and she said no. Then I asked if she wanted something else that is said to be good for headaches and she playfully tossed the balled up, empty plastic grocery bag in my face. To which I responded by bopping her on the forehead with the rather weighty bar. The impact was hard enough to crack the bar and make a loud thunk that brought T running to see "what happened?" I couldn't help it, I laughed so hard while simultaneously trying to soothe her. Insensitive bastard win!
See, that isn't long enough for a written Shame, but a comic Shame Short? Perfect. I'll have to get a start on the style of the comic drawing and see about cross promoting them with the short stories.

Like I said, random thought...
